- Restrooms are called washrooms
- Restaurants are conservative in the paper napkins used and all napkins I saw were from recycled paper
- Pubs are often referred to as public houses
- Kept seeing Canuck in various contexts and discovered later that it is a word for Canadian. The Canadian National Hockey team is also called Canadian Canucks.

The clouds have returned to Vancouver but these are the small white ones that don't want to completely cover the blue skies like their heavier gray counterparts. I set out at 11 a.m. all excited to hit Medina Cafe and have one of their delicious waffles. I'd been there on Friday morning and fallen in love with their waffle with white chocolate pistachio rose water topping. I walked briskly & reached there at 11.10 only to find a huge crowd waiting to get in :-(. I am not surprised that it is a popular place.
Disappointed, I decided to continue with a growling stomach to the next stop on the day's tour, the Vancouver Public Library. I was glad to see coffee shops in the library complex and got myself a Matcha Latte & a wrap. As I worked on my breakfast, the crowd seemed to grow outside the library entrance. Only then did I realize that that the library hadn't opened and people were starting to line up. It was weird to see about 50+ people waiting outside the door - I guess it must have been the end of daylight savings that must have causes people to land up early :-).
The building's exterior resembles the Colosseum. The library is the biggest one I have been too - it has seven floors of books & reference material. Libraries are always inspiring & humbling places to visit - you come out realizing how little you know and at the same time inspired to read & know more about the world we live in!

Thanks to the US consulate deciding to take an additional day with my visa processing, I had to spend the weekend in Vancouver. The weather gods have been most graceful. It was raining incessantly since Wednesday night but come Saturday morning, the clouds cleared out and I got to see blue skies and the sun. Now with the cold & rain out the way, it would be criminal not to roam around, wouldn't it? So, I set out to walk along the waterfront and see the historic steam clock at Gastown & Canada Place in the morning. The highlight of the trip was this shop Hill's Native Art which specializes in totem poles and other art from the Pacific Northwest. How I wish I had the time to learn every art in this world .. now that's what is defined as wishful thinking :)

In the afternoon I headed out to Granville Island - took the shuttle service from my hotel and got myself dropped at Hornby St & Seabreeze Walk from where I took the rainbow colored Aquabus ferry to Granville Island Public Market. Granville Island is basically a shopping district. The were two highlights for me here. One was the organized manner in which various buskers were performing in different locations on the island. At least for me, live music rejuvenates me instantly. The other highlight was this shop called Maiwa Handprints that sells embroidered, blockprinted, handwoven & naturally dyed textiles from throughout the world especially from India. You can call me biased but I think this shop is further proof to the fact that India is up there in textile design and even if we just preserved our traditional designs and exported them without innovating, we would have enough to keep the world interested for many decades. Anyway, if you are in Vancouver and are interested in Indian textiles, this is a good shop to go to. They also have dyes & materials if you are interested in dyeing, printing or painting fabrics personally. I bought myself a wooden block print hoping to try it out on fabric and paint once I am back home.

As it got chill & dark, I decided I better return as I had to walk back all the way. The walk back was interesting as it was Halloween evening and most people were in costumes rushing out to go to their respective parties. That was my lovely Saturday in Vancouver!

Rating: 3/4 (Fantastic music, a star couple, an imploring romantic plot and still a letdown!)
I must have listened to the sweet songs from Sillunu Oru Kaadhal (சில்லுனு ஒரு காதல்) countless number of times! Introduced to it by my flatmate, I fell head over heels in love with New York Nagaram and Munbe Vaa. These easily rank as some of the best creations of A. R. Rahman! Add to that the star couple Surya and Jyothika and you have an enticing movie. Due to my dependence on English subtitles for Tamil movies, I could check out this 2006 movie only recently.
Sillunu Oru Kaadhal is a romantic movie starring Surya, Jyothika and Bhoomika. Goutham (Surya) and Kundavi (Jyothika) are thrown together into a wedding planned by their elders. They are both not interested in it, but settle down and in 6 years are a happy loving couple settled in Mumbai, and the parents of a charming little girl. Their cozy haven of love is rocked when Kundavi discovers that Goutham had loved and married another girl Ishu (Bhoomika) in his college years. This wedding was ripped apart by Ishu’s dad, who sends her away to Australia. In Goutham’s college diary Kundavi discovers how madly in love he was with her, poignantly asking that just one day with Ishu would fulfill his life. Wrought by love for Goutham, Kundavi seeks out Ishu and gives the college couple a day together to rekindle their love.
Though backed by fantastic music and a stunning star couple, Sillunu Oru Kaadhal disappoints. The plot is engaging and has lots of potential, but is squandered away in all departments by bad editing, cinematography, acting and sloppy dialogues. Except for New York Nagaram and Munbe Vaa, both of which have poetic lyrics and are slickly shot, I could not even stand watching the rest of the songs. The movie at a length of 3 hours, is far far too long. There is a strong chemistry between Surya and Jyothika, but their acting is nowhere close to what is demanded by their roles. Jyothika implores the viewer to connect to the plight of Kundavi, but is not supported by anything else from the movie. SOK shows lots of potential to be a romantic classic, but in the end is a letdown.

Rating: 3/4 (Meaningless, funny and fast paced)
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is a 2005 comic take on the film noir movies. The film is narrated in flashback by Harry, the character played by Robert Downey Jr. A small time thief, destiny lands Harry in Los Angeles as a candidate for a detective role in a movie. He runs into his childhood sweetheart Harmony (Michelle Monagan) who is also an aspiring actress. Completing the trio is Gay Perry (Val Kilmer), a homesexual detective whose job is to prepare Harry for his role. Much like in a detective book, these three are thrown into a spree of mysterious murders being committed by someone, they need to figure out who and why.
Directed by Shane Black, Kiss Kiss Black Black strongly reminded me of Burn After Reading, by the Coen Brothers. Similar to BAR, strange events and people are thrust upon Harry and Perry without warning or reason. Robert Downey Jr. looking decades younger than in Ironman, shines through with brilliant acting and sarcasm. Val Kilmer thoroughly enjoys his role in KKBB, but Michelle Monagan sticks out like a sore thumb for bad casting. The movie has a relentless pace, nothing on screen makes much sense, but is funny. A good entertaining watch.

He woke up one fine evening. It was winter, the house's primary occupant hadn't returned yet which meant the heater wasn't on yet. He went back to sleep. A while later he sensed the door being opened. And closed. The man was back! Within a few minutes he could sense the heat in the house and decided it was time to start proceedings for the day. He woke himself up laboriously, all 8 legs reluctantly overcoming their passiveness. A long night lay ahead for them.
He had lived there ever since he had been born, which wasn't too long. All of his family had perished around the time the new occupant had moved in. He had learnt that that was the case with all spider families around that place. They lived and flourished from move in to move out. A move-out usually signaled a cleaning of the house by the owners which finished out most of their populace. Still they survived just enough to ensure there were enough of them to survive the next clean up. Keeping the species going was an important duty. ( Read on )

Going to be a pointless post, so if you are not feeling like it, better skip it. Read ahead at your own peril.
There, I warned you. Now for the pointlessness. Been 2 years to the date since I turned up in this country. I made a post about completing one year. So thought its only right and proper to make another one about completing 2 years. So how was this year compared to the last one? For one, I had more money to spend, the loan being a thing of the past. Still there was this reluctance to let it flow out of my pockets. Dark clouds of recession kept me in check, making me save for the rainy days. I even chalked out a plan to travel around India if I were to lose my job and return home in a hurry.
Talking of recession, last time it happened, I was just out of college and had to see my friends struggling to find jobs. This year, I was just out of grad school, ok, around a year or so, and again saw friends struggling to find jobs. Strange! Last time I just escaped to China hoping that they do well. This time though, hoping to be there for them more.
Less traveling, still yet to go east. Kept going to California - 3 consecutive months in fact and loved every one of those trips - different experiences each of them. Most importantly, parents came to the US. First trip out of the country for them. They seemed to have fun and loved it.
Work-wise, still doing the same job I was doing end of last year. Not sure if that's a good thing or bad. Good, as am getting more depth on what I am doing, and bad as I don't seem to be learning much new. Also, want some change myself.
More regular at the gym now. Got my shoulder working again, good enough to bowl at a decent pace. Happy about being able to rattle stumps with the perfect yorkers again.
Not sure what the next year has in store for me, but I guess I'll be in a different place when I sit down to write about another year gone, or will this date still be an anniversary for me? If only I had swalpave swalpa hindsight.
Well, told ya! Its a pointless post. Wait for the next one, will make up for it. Till then...
